Rates – Group Leaders, Teachers, Chaperones - Schools & Youth Groups
The required ratio of teachers/chaperones to students by the Nova Scotia Department of Education is 1 to 8. Martock recommends this same ratio for all groups. For every eight student/group members one complimentary package goes to a teacher or chaperone. Regular group rates will apply to teachers or chaperones accompanying the group beyond this ratio.
Please Note: Martock is pleased to offer instruction and equipment for disabled skiers. The equipment we currently use for disabled skiing belongs to the Nova Scotia Division of the Canadian Association of Disabled Skiers and is intended for use by their members only. They have requested that anyone including school students who wish to use this equipment be a member of CADS-NS. Please contact Lorraine Burch, CADS-NS at 902.425.5450 for membership information. Unfortunately, students who are not a member of CADS-NS will not be permitted use of this equipment.
Why Should School Students Ski or Snowboard?
- Skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding are great ways to spend quality time with family, friends, fellow students, and teachers.
- Skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding are perfect ways for everyone to get out in the fresh air, learn new skills, and make memories that can last a lifetime.
- Skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding can be enjoyed for a lifetime. Statistics show that over fifty percent of all adult skiers/snowboarders began skiing/riding before the age of seventeen, of these skiers, half began before age twelve, and over forty percent of all beginner skiers started through a beginner package or school skiing program. (Canadian Ski Council - Canadian Skier & Snowboarder 1995-96 Survey Results).
- Skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding will improve the level of physical fitness among school aged children and teach them a healthy way to enjoy the outdoors in winter. Children are not as physically active as they used to be with the fitness programs of the 70’s (especially in winter). Skiing can be a viable supplement to any school’s physical education plan.
- Skiing and snowboarding are motor-skill development activities which can be enjoyed at any level and at any age - from beginner to advanced - with many levels of certification that can be achieved.
- Skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding are safe sports. Contrary to media attention, accident statistics for skiing average three accidents per one thousand participant days compared to 21 per 1000 in hockey or football. Skiing is safer than riding your bicycle or swimming (Ski Industry Statistics)
- Skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding are affordable. Most ski areas offer specially priced programs for beginners and students to learn to ski, as well as discounted days to practice afterward. There is also the opportunity to "swap" or shop for used equipment and clothing. The average price of a ski day for students is $25.00 or less.
- Students get excited about ski trips. Ski trips can be used as an incentive for students, or teachers can introduce academic aspects for the trip. New curriculum ideas are endless; science, fitness environmental studies and even consumer/resort education. Some things can be better learned outside the classroom in a fun environment.
- Students and teachers have a chance to get to know each other in a related fun environment. They also arrive back at school refreshed.

Type II - Ski moderately. Prefer a variety of speeds. Ski on a varied terrain, including most difficult trails. All skiers who do not meet all descriptions of either Type I or Type III.
Type III - Ski agressively. Normally ski at higher speed. Prefer steeper and more challenging terrain. Favor higher than average release/retention settings. This corresponds to decreased capability to release in a fall in order to decrease risk of inadvertent binding release.

N.S.S.A.A. recommends the ratio for teachers/chaperones to students is 1 to 8. HELMETS
Helmets are required to be worn by students/group members while downhill skiing and snowboarding. (Helmets are not required for cross-country skiing.)
LESSONS AND EVALUATIONS
All students will meet at the snow school meeting area directly opposite the rental shop exit for class division or ability evaluations. Students/group members taking cross-country ski lessons will be met by their instructor at either the entrance to the cross-country ski park or the snow school meeting area. This will be specified prior to the lesson start. The students will be divided up in classes or skier evaluations based on their ability levels. All beginner and intermediate students will be assessed by skiing/riding around a series of cones on the beginner slope - regardless of information received as to their ability. Season pass holders of the resort will not have to do the evaluation.
- "N" ABILITY For all students who have never skied before, the lesson will start immediately on the beginner area. After an appropriate lesson beginners will be re-assessed. Those who do not show a level of ability will be staying on the beginner area to practice. They will not receive access to other trails or lifts until they are able to demonstrate the level of ability necessary. Please be aware that some first time skiers, depending on their level of fitness and coordination, may not advance beyond the beginner area.
- LEVEL I ABILITY After the beginner lesson - students who show a level of ability will be taken to an appropriate run for their ability. The instructor and/or lift attendant will show the students the proper lift to use, how to ride that lift properly, how to disembark the lift properly, and the route to the appropriate trail. The instructor will ski/ride with participants down the trail. Students who pass this second evaluation will have their lift ticket marked for lift access but will only be allowed to ski easier runs. If students do not show ability at this level, they will be instructed to remain on the beginner slope to practice, and will not receive lift access at this time.
- LEVEL II ABILITY The students who show Level II ability during the evaluation will be taken to the appropriate run. The instructor and/or lift attendant will show the students the proper lift to use, how to ride that lift properly, how to disembark the lift properly, and the route to the appropriate trail. The instructor will ski/ride with all participant down the trail. Students who pass this second evaluation will have their lift ticket marked for lift access but will only be allowed to ski easier or intermediate runs. If students do not show ability at this level, they will be instructed to remain on the green/easier runs to practice, and their lift ticket will be marked for easier runs.
- LEVEL III ABILITY The students who show Level III ability during the evaluation will be taken by an instructor to a trail suitable for their ability. The instructor and/or lift attendant will show the students the proper lift to use, how to ride that lift properly, how to disembark the lift properly, and the route to the trail. The instructor will ski/ride with all participants down the trail. Students who pass this second evaluation will have their lift ticket marked for all lift access and will be permitted to ski all trails and use all lifts running that day. If students do not show ability at this level, they will be instructed to remain on either green/easier or blue/intermediate runs to practice and their lift ticket will be marked for these runs.
Please Note: Martock may limit or prohibit Discover School Ski/Snowboard Program participants from using certain terrain.
If the lessons for Level II and Level III are to be held at a later time during the day, the lesson time will be marked on the students lift ticket and the student be will be told where to meet and the time for their lesson. The students will be able to free-ski/practice until that time. Should any of the students wish to be re-evaluated during the day, they will be told where to meet and the time for the next evaluation.
Students found skiing on trails they are not authorized
for may have their lift privileges revoked for the day. Teachers, chaperones
